Understanding Your Matric Results & APS Scores
Matric results are one of the most important milestones in your education and career life. Understanding what your National Senior Certificate (NSC) levels mean will enable you to make the right decisions for your future, whether that means applying for a degree, upgrading your marks, or entering the workforce.
NSC Levels vs APS Points
Your NSC percentage translates directly into an Admission Point Score (APS). Universities use this APS to determine if you qualify for specific courses. Here is how your marks convert to points:
| NSC Level | NSC % | APS Points |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 80 - 100% | 7 |
| 6 | 70 - 79% | 6 |
| 5 | 60 - 69% | 5 |
| 4 | 50 - 59% | 4 |
| 3 | 40 - 49% | 3 |
| 2 | 30 - 39% | 2 |
| 1 | 0 - 29% | 0 |
Matric Pass Requirements Explained
It is always compulsory to pass your Home Language with at least 40%. Depending on your overall points and subject scores, you will achieve one of the following pass levels:
-
Bachelor's Pass (Degree)
Minimum 40% for Home Language, 50% for four high credit subjects, and 30% for two other subjects. Total points: 23+. This grants provisional entrance into a University or Degree course. -
Diploma Pass
Minimum 40% for Home Language, 40% for four high credit subjects, and 30% for two other subjects. Total points: 19+. This grants provisional entrance into a University of Technology or Diploma course. -
Higher Certificate Pass
Minimum 40% for Home Language, 40% for two other subjects, and 30% for three subjects. Total points: 15+. This grants provisional entrance into a College or Certificate course. -
NSC Pass (Matric Pass)
Minimum 40% for Home Language, 40% for two other subjects, and 30% for four subjects. Total points: 14+. While you officially pass Matric, this does not enable you to study at a university.
Important Note on "Provisional Entrance": Achieving a Bachelor's pass means you meet the minimum requirements to apply for a degree. However, competitive programmes (like Engineering or Medicine) often require much higher marks in specific subjects (e.g., 80%+ in Mathematics). Always check the specific university prospectus requirements before applying.
